Song of the day: Fever

Written by J. Davenport and E. Cooley
Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Sequencing, keyboards and programming by Shep Pettibone and Tony Shimkin
Additional keyboards by Joe Moskowitz

This fourth Erotica single was released in March 1993, only outside the US and Canada. The dancy cover of the classic Peggy Lee song climbed the charts to #6 in the UK and #7 in Japan. In Australia it stalled at a disappointing #51. It wasn't released in the US because it was the B-single for Bad Girl. The maxi-single of that song featured several remixes of Fever. Thanks to those remixes, Fever became a #1 on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart. The Edit One remix (used in the video) only appeared as a B-single for Rain in Europe.

You give me
You give me fever

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear
Listen to me baby
Hear every word I say
No one can love you the way I do
'Cause they don't know how to love you my way

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know you're gonna treat me right
Bless my soul I love you
Take this heart away
Take these arms I'll never use
And just believe in what my lips have to say

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Everybody's got the fever
That is something you should know
Fever isn't such a new scene
Fever started long ago

You give me fever
Fever
You give me, you give me fever
You give me... fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Romeo loved Juliet
Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her
He said Julie baby you're my flame
He gave her fever

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know you're gonna treat me right

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
Fever with his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight

Everybody's got the fever
That is something you should know
Fever isn't such a new scene
Fever started long ago
Fever

Captain Smith and Pocahontas
Had a very mad affair
When her daddy tried to kill him
She said, daddy oh don't you dare
He gives me fever
With his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight
Fever, I'm his Misses
Daddy, won't you treat him right

Fever when you kiss them
Fever if you live and learn
Fever, 'til you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn

The video by Stephane Sednaoui is quite an extraordinary one. Using red as dominating colour, the video shows fast images of a dancing Madonna and a male dancer. Madonna is seen either wearing a red wig and a red dress, or a golden Gaultier outfit with silver-painted hair and skin. The use of bodypaint is typical for Sednaoui's work. The video is set to the Edit One remix of the song.
Fever also has a sepia-toned montage video consisting of classic Madonna clips with an edit of the album version that was initially used to promote the single in the UK.

After Erotica, Fever was the second song on the setlist of the Girlie Show and the first one Madonna sang live. As the audience goes wild, she brings a big smile on her face as she sing "You give me fever", again using the Edit One remix. No doubt big smiles on many fans' faces as well when they saw the two sexy dancers that accompanied Madonna on stage. It was the first but certainly not the last performance of the show in which Madonna and her dancers get physical. Madonna even hinted at Rita Hayworth (her signature femme fatale role in the 1946 film noir Gilda) when she seductively took off her gloves as a striptease.
