Song of the day: Paradise (Not For Me)

Written by Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Madonna
Produced by Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Madonna

Paradise (Not For Me) was the first collaboration between Madonna and Mirwais. The song was recorded in 1999 to be featured on Mirwais' album Production. It gave fans a first glance at the new style approach that Madonna was taking for her new album. Only later was decided that this song was in fact to be included on the Music album. For Madonna's album the track was slightly re-arranged; the instrumental part in the middle of the song is longer than the version on Mirwais' record.

I can't remember
When I was young
I can't explain
If it was wrong

My life goes on
But not the same
Into your eyes
My face remains

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

I was so blind
I could not see
Your paradise
Is not for me

Autour de moi
Je ne vois pas
Qui sont les anges
Surement pas moi

Encore une fois
Je suis cassée
Encore une fois
Je n'y crois pas

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

There is a light
Above my head
Into your eyes
My face remains

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

I can't remember
When I was young
Into your eyes
My face remains

Into your eyes
My face remains

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

I've been so high
I've been so down
Up to the skies
Down to the ground

On the Drowned World Tour, Paradise was used as an interlude so Madonna could go backstage for a costume change. However, she appeared on screen in a beautiful Manga-inspired video. Meanwhile four white cocoons were hanging on the ceiling. When they burst open they revealed four butt-naked (except for a string) dancers, hanging upside down. As the song continued, they slowly climbed into upward position and came down on stage. With the words 'There is a light' the dancers uncovered a reddish glow in their mouths.

Madonna created a beautiful intimate moment on the Confessions Tour by adding Paradise to the setlist right after Drowned World. Yitzhak Sinwani joins her, introduced by Madonna as "my friend Isaac", adding a different comment about him on each show. They perform the song as a duet with Madonna playing the acoustic guitar and Isaac singing the originally French parts in Yiddish, while the screens show a beautiful tree with pink petals that are slowly falling down, making the humble rendition a special highlight of the show.

Song of the day: Fever

Written by J. Davenport and E. Cooley
Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Sequencing, keyboards and programming by Shep Pettibone and Tony Shimkin
Additional keyboards by Joe Moskowitz

This fourth Erotica single was released in March 1993, only outside the US and Canada. The dancy cover of the classic Peggy Lee song climbed the charts to #6 in the UK and #7 in Japan. In Australia it stalled at a disappointing #51. It wasn't released in the US because it was the B-single for Bad Girl. The maxi-single of that song featured several remixes of Fever. Thanks to those remixes, Fever became a #1 on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart. The Edit One remix (used in the video) only appeared as a B-single for Rain in Europe.

You give me
You give me fever

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear
Listen to me baby
Hear every word I say
No one can love you the way I do
'Cause they don't know how to love you my way

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know you're gonna treat me right
Bless my soul I love you
Take this heart away
Take these arms I'll never use
And just believe in what my lips have to say

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Everybody's got the fever
That is something you should know
Fever isn't such a new scene
Fever started long ago

You give me fever
Fever
You give me, you give me fever
You give me... fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Romeo loved Juliet
Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her
He said Julie baby you're my flame
He gave her fever

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know you're gonna treat me right

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
Fever with his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight

Everybody's got the fever
That is something you should know
Fever isn't such a new scene
Fever started long ago
Fever

Captain Smith and Pocahontas
Had a very mad affair
When her daddy tried to kill him
She said, daddy oh don't you dare
He gives me fever
With his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight
Fever, I'm his Misses
Daddy, won't you treat him right

Fever when you kiss them
Fever if you live and learn
Fever, 'til you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn

The video by Stephane Sednaoui is quite an extraordinary one. Using red as dominating colour, the video shows fast images of a dancing Madonna and a male dancer. Madonna is seen either wearing a red wig and a red dress, or a golden Gaultier outfit with silver-painted hair and skin. The use of bodypaint is typical for Sednaoui's work. The video is set to the Edit One remix of the song.
Fever also has a sepia-toned montage video consisting of classic Madonna clips with an edit of the album version that was initially used to promote the single in the UK.

After Erotica, Fever was the second song on the setlist of the Girlie Show and the first one Madonna sang live. As the audience goes wild, she brings a big smile on her face as she sing "You give me fever", again using the Edit One remix. No doubt big smiles on many fans' faces as well when they saw the two sexy dancers that accompanied Madonna on stage. It was the first but certainly not the last performance of the show in which Madonna and her dancers get physical. Madonna even hinted at Rita Hayworth (her signature femme fatale role in the 1946 film noir Gilda) when she seductively took off her gloves as a striptease.

Song of the day: Vogue

<3

Written by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Mixed by Shep Pettibone
Edited by Tony Shimkin
Programming by Alan Friedman
Background vocals by Niki Haris, Donna DeLory and Ndea Davenport

Many will be surprised to know that Vogue, one of Madonna's biggest hits, was originally written as a B-single for Keep It Together. Fortunately her record company realized the song had a lot of hit potential and they released it late March, 1990. They quickly added it to I'm Breathless, though it had nothing to do with Dick Tracy and had a completely different sound from the other tracks. Vogue, a tribute to the biggest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, became one of her biggest #1 hits, topping the charts for several weeks in the US (reaching double Platinum), UK, Canada and Japan. In Australia it was released as a double A-side single with Keep It Together and was #1 for 5 weeks there. Vogue received an American Music Award as 'Favorite Dance Single'.

Strike a pose
Strike a pose
Vogue, vogue, vogue
Vogue, vogue, vogue

Look around, everywhere you turn is heartache
It's everywhere that you go (look around)
You try everything you can to escape
The pain of life that you know (life that you know)

When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for, so

Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music (move to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it

All you need is your own imagination
So use it, that's what it's for (that's what it's for)
Go inside, for your finest inspiration
Your dreams will open the door (open up the door)

It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it

Come on, vogue
Let your body groove to the music (groove to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it

Beauty's where you find it
Not just where you bump and grind it
Soul is in the musical
That's where I feel so beautiful
Magical, life's a ball
So get up on the dance floor

Vogue (vogue)
Let your body move to the music (move to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue (vogue)
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it

Vogue (vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (move to the music)
Vogue (vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (go with the flow)

Greta Garbo, and Monroe
Dietrich and DiMaggio
Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean
On the cover of a magazine

Grace Kelly, Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rogers, dance on air

They had style, they had grace
Rita Hayworth gave good face
Lauren, Katharine, Lana too
Bette Davis, we love you

Ladies with an attitude
Fellows that were in the mood
Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it

Vogue, vogue, vogue
Vogue, vogue, vogue

Oooh, you've got to
Let your body move to the music
Oooh, you've got to just
Let your body go with the flow
Oooh, you've got to
Vogue, vogue, vogue

David Fincher directed the magnificent video, which not only pays tribute to famous Hollywood stars, but also to 'vogue-ing', a dance style that until then was typical for the gay scene: it mimicks the poses of the models in Vogue Magazine. The black & white video shows Madonna in a daring see-through shirt, but also in very classy clothes and with different hair styles, while she's surrounded by male dancers 'striking a pose'. Much like the song, the video is a Madonna classic. Originally MTV wanted to cut out the shot where her breasts are clearly visible through her lace blouse. Madonna refused and MTV backed down. Late 1990, there was also a video from the famous VMA performance. On that award show, the original video received 8 nominations and won in the categories 'Best Editing in a Video', 'Best Cinematography in a Video' and 'Best Direction in a Video'. Why she lost in 'Best Video of the Year', 'Best Dance Video' and 'Best Choreography in a Video' to respectively Sinead O'Connor, MC Hammer (who?) and Janet Jackson remains a mystery.

Vogue was released only days before the launch of the Blond Ambition Tour so it got its performance premiere on tour. For the first time fans could see the very particular Vogue moves live. It started out with dancers striking a pose on stage. Then Madonna came on, wearing a black pointy Gaultier bra and black tights, and together they danced the now legendary choreography.

Madonna's tour was just finished when she performed Vogue at the 1990 MTV VMA (Sept. 6th, 1990). This performance actually topped the one of the tour. Although she used the same choreography with her tour dancers, they were now all dressed up in 18th century French court style, with Madonna as a pale Marie Antoinette in an extravagant court dress and a huge wig.

On the Girlie Show Madonna added another memorable version to Vogue's curriculum. The song received an Eastern vibe (inspired by a scene from 1956's musical The King And I), especially the beginning. As we can expect from Vogue, the costumes and choreography were again extraordinary. Madonna, Niki and Donna wore black hotpants and dito bra, and sported a tall and very special jewels-encrusted tiara. The dancers wore pants and only an open jacket, easily revealing chests & breasts. Typical were the no-touch handclaps and the amazing solo dances.

During the Ray Of Light era, Madonna implied she wouldn't perform her old songs anymore; "I can't see myself singing Like A Virgin anymore, even Vogue seems like a million years away." Fortunately she changed her mind later and opened her Re-Invention Tour with Vogue. And after 11 years of absence, this classic was more fabulous than ever. As part of the stage rose up, Madonna appeared in a beautiful golden (in Europe lilac) corset by Christian Lacroix. The crowd went wild as Madonna stood upside down on her head. It wasn't the only stunt: during another amazing but re-invented Vogue choreography, she and her dancers (again dressed in Louis XVI style) stood backwards on hands and feet and walked on stage like crabs. Like all the previous Vogue performances, Madonna lipsynched throughout the whole song, as she always preferred to concentrate on a perfectly timed choreography.

On top of all that amazing eye candy, the performance also included a hallucinating video backdrop, made by Pusher Media. It used all 4 screens to create a 3D effect, which seemed to enlarge the stage. The video used footage from the Steven Klein shoot for the tour book and was perfectly adapted to the choreography. When they were 'walking like crabs', the room in the video turned upside down as well.

"Ladies! Ladies! Ladies!" The performance at the Sticky & Sweet Tour is revolutionary in two ways: not only is it sung live for the first time, but it's also mixed with another song. The mash-up with 4 Minutes (and a sample from Timbaland's 'Give It To Me') brings Vogue into the 21st century with a matching brand new choreography, inspired by the tektonik dance technique. Madonna performs at the end of catwalk, flanked by 8 of her dancers, who wear a daring and bondage-inspired outfit. After the name-dropping rap, the original piano sample makes a comeback and Madonna and the dancers line up on the main stage for some classic vogue moves. Madonna then leaves the stage while the dancers give an encore on the catwalk to the enthusiastic crowd.

The Kingdom

Free thinker

My First Book

Love is understanding

Rescue me

Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Mixed by Shep Pettibone and Goh Hotoba
Keyboards and programming by Peter Schwartz
Additional programming by Joe Moskowitz
Background vocals by Dian Sorel, Catherine Russell and Lillias White

I'm talking, I'm talking
I believe in the power of love
I'm singing, I'm singing
I believe that you can rescue me

With you I'm not a little girl
With you I'm not a man
When all the hurt inside of me comes out
You understand
You see that I'm ferocious
You see that I am weak
You see that I am silly
And pretentious and a freak

But I don't feel too strange for you
Don't know exactly what you do
I think when love is pure you try
To understand the reasons why
And I prefer this mystery
It cancels out my misery
And gives me hope that there could be
A person that loves me

Rescue me (Rescue me)
It's hard to believe
Your love has given me hope
Rescue me (Rescue me)
It's hard to believe
I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope

With you I'm not a fascist
Can't play you like a toy
And when I need to dominate
You're not my little boy
You see that I am hungry
For a life of understanding
And you forgive my angry little heart
When she's demanding
You bring me to my knees
While I'm scratching out the eyes
Of a world I want to conquer
And deliver, and despise
And right while I am kneeling there
I suddenly begin to care
And understand that there could be
A person that loves me

Rescue me (Rescue me)
It's hard to believe
Your love has given me hope
Rescue me (Rescue me)
It's hard to believe
I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope

Love is understanding
It's hard to believe
Life can be so demanding
I'm sending out an S.O.S.
Stop me from drowning
Baby I'll do the rest

Rescue me (Rescue me)
Your love has given me hope
(Your love has given me hope)
Rescue me (Rescue me)
I'm drowning
Baby throw out your rope
(Baby throw out your rope)

Rescue me (Rescue me)
Your love has given me hope
(Your love has given me hope)
Rescue me (Rescue me)
I'm drowning
Baby throw out your rope
(Baby throw out your rope)

Ooh ahh, ooh ahh, love is understanding
Ooh ahh, ooh ahh, love is understanding

Love is understanding
It's hard to believe
Life can be so demanding
I'm sending out an S.O.S.
Rescue me, rescue me

It's not my business to decide
How good you are for me
How valuable you are
And what the world can see
Only that you try to understand me
And have the courage to love me for me

I believe
(I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

I believe
(I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

I'm singing I believe
(I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)
I'm singing, I'm singing, I'm singing
(I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

I'm talking, I'm talking
(I believe in the power)
I believe in the power of love
(I believe that you can rescue me)

I'm talking, I'm talking
(I believe in the power)
I believe in the power of love
(I believe that you can rescue me)

I'm singing, I'm singing, I believe
(I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

Hey hey, hey hey
(I believe in the power)
R.E.S.C.U.E. me
(I believe you can rescue me)
Only you can rescue me
Hey hey, hey...
(I believe in the power)
(I believe you can rescue me)
(I believe in the power)
(I believe you can rescue me)

Song of the day: The Power of Good-bye

Written by Madonna and Rick Nowels
Produced by Madonna, William Orbit and Patrick Leonard
String arrangement by Craig Armstrong

Your heart is not open
So I must go
The spell has been broken
I loved you so

Freedom comes when you learn to let go
Creation comes when you learn to say no

You were my lesson
I had to learn
I was your fortress
You had to burn

Pain is a warning that something's wrong
I pray to God that it won't be long
Do you wanna go higher?

There's nothing left to try
There's no place left to hide
There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

Your heart is not open
So I must go
The spell has been broken
I loved you so
You were my lesson
I had to learn
I was your fortress

There's nothing left to lose
There's no more heart to bruise
There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

Learn to say good-bye
I yearn to say good-bye

There's nothing left to try
There's no more places to hide
There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

There's nothing left to lose
There's no more heart to bruise
There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

This beautiful ballad about a painful breakup was the fourth single, released late 1998. Though Madonna's ballads usually do well in the charts (and this one deserved to), it only went to #11 in the US, #6 in the UK and Canada, and #7 in Japan.

Director Matthew Rolston shot the blue-themed video at the 'Silver Top' mansion and Malibu beach in LA. Madonna says goodbye to her lover, who's played by actor Goran Visnjic. After a last confrontation between the lovers, Madonna sets for the beach, where she seems to drown herself at the end of the video. Whether she actually does, is a point of discussion among fans. Some scenes of the video (like the kiss and the chess game) are inspired by the original The Thomas Crown Affair movie (featuring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway), while the beach scene is a homage to Joan Crawford's performance in the 1946 movie Humoresque.

Often imitated, but never duplicated.

Unusual for the mid-90's, Madonna promoted this song on the Internet, with a 30-second sample of "Secret" and the cover image of the then-unreleased Bedtime Stories. She also left a message with the following words:
“ Hello, all you Cyberheads! Welcome to the 90's version of intimacy. You can hear me... You can even see me... But you can't touch me... do you recognize my voice?... It's Madonna. Often imitated, but never duplicated. Or, should I say, often irritated?
If you feel like it, you can download the sound file of my new single "Secret", from my new album, "Bedtime Stories", which comes out next month. Two songs that I love

She IS crazy!

Song of the day: Oh, Father

Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard

After the joyful Cherish, Madonna released this serious, rather dramatic fourth single in October 1989. Madonna describes her difficult love-hate relationship with her father during her youth. Maybe this material was a bit too hard or sad for the Americans, who only allowed it to #20 in the charts. It wasn't very welcome in Japan (#12) or Australia (#51) either. Six years later, in December 1995 the song was released in Europe for the first time, as part of the Something To Remember collection. But even then, the UK didn't seem ready for this great ballad; it stalled at #16.

It's funny that way
You can get used
To the tears and the pain
What a child will believe
You never loved me

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you
I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You once had the power
I never felt so good about myself

Seems like yesterday
I lay down next to your boots and I prayed
For your anger to end
Oh Father I have sinned

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you
I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You once had the power
I never felt so good about myself

Oh Father
You never wanted to live that way
You never wanted to hurt me
Why am I running away

Oh Father
You never wanted to live that way
You never wanted to hurt me
Why am I running away

Maybe someday
When I look back I'll be able to say
You didn't mean to be cruel
Somebody hurt you too

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you
I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You once had the power
I never felt so good

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you
I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You once had the power
I never felt so good about myself

David Fincher directed a very strong dramatic video that matched the song perfectly. Shot completely in black & white, the video shows images of Madonna as a little girl with her angry father yelling at her. It also shows the funeral of the girl's mother, explicitly referring to the death of Madonna's mother. As the girl is dancing on her mother's grave, in a beautiful snowy landscape, a grown-up Madonna watches her. The video was so explicit that MTV restricted it for being too disturbing.

During the church segment on the Blond Ambition Tour Madonna performed a medley of Live To Tell and Oh Father. It was one of her best vocal performances of the show. One of the dancers walked around with an urn of incence, then danced with her.

It's the Queen, bitches!

Madonna, Britney's kiss voted best

Pop divas Madonna and Britney Spear's infamous smooch at the MTV Video Music Awards 2003 has been voted the top kiss of the decade.
The two superstars made headlines around the world after they puckered up at the annual ceremony and British department store Selfridges has branded the kiss the most iconic of the first 10 years of the new millenium, reports starpulse.com.
While Tobey Maguire's passionate liplock with Kirsten Dunst in 2002s Spider-Man came second in the rundown, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's slow-burning snog in Brokeback Mountain in 2005 was named third.

Absolute Magic

Richard Corman's never before seen Madonna images from the '80s now available for sale.
A few days ago we reported about the collection of Madonna images by photographer Richard Corman that was exhibited publicly for the first time in New York City at the "Virigin Spirit" event which also featured fashions by Prince Peter and music by Jessica 6 and Dan Wade.

News is now in that Corman just released nearly two dozen of these never-before-seen images he took over 25 years ago.
The photographs were taken in New York City between 1983 and 1985 and feature shots of Madonna's first New York apartment, her surrounding neighborhood on the Lower East Side and some images from the set of her 1985 movie, "Vision Quest".
22 selected, signed prints are now being released in limited editions of 30 pieces each. These unique gilded gold framed prints retail for $4,000, they are also available unframed for $3,250 exclusively at Richard Corman's Store: richardcormanstore.com.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit Haitian Earthquake Relief.

Although Corman photographed Madonna prior to her unprecedented fame, he immediately recognized her unique potential to be something larger than life.
"I met Madonna through a friend, I was told I had to meet her," Corman said "I fell in love with her energy, her charisma."

While the collection features Madonna in a variety of 80s styles such as heavy accessories, pegged jeans, or the favorite, denim jacket. Corman explains that regardless of style, these photos are eternal.

"I think she looks as modern as any kid walking down the street," Corman said, adding that he experienced "absolute magic" as he photographed the vibrant and youthful Madonna.

Song of the day: What It Feels Like For a Girl

Written by Madonna and Guy Sigsworth
Produced by Madonna, Guy Sigsworth and Mark -Spike- Stent
Programming, guitars and keyboards by Guy Sigsworth

The intro is an excerpt from the movie 'The Cement Garden'. The words are spoken by actrice Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge -je t'aime moi non plus- Gainsbourg. Madonna got her inspiration for the song after seeing this particular scene.

Madonna sure knows what it feels like for a girl, having made her way in an all-male world. Inspired by a scene from the movie 'The Cement Garden' she wrote about the complexities of a girl's life. The song was released in the spring of 2001 as the third single from Music. It peaked at #7 (UK), #23 (US), #2 (Canada) and #6 (Japan). A spanish version, called Lo Que Siente La Mujer, appeared on one of the maxi-singles.

(intro:)
Girls can wear jeans
And cut their hair short
Wear shirts and boots
Cause it's okay to be a boy

But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
Cause you think being a girl is degrading
But secretly
You'd love to know what it's like
Wouldn't you?
What it feels like for a girl

Silky smooth
Lips as sweet as candy, baby
Tight blue jeans
Skin that shows in patches

Strong inside but you don't know it
Good little girls they never show it
When you open up your mouth to speak
Could you be a little weak

Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like in this world
for a girl

Hair that twirls on finger tips so gently, baby
Hands that rest on jutting hips repenting
Hurt that's not supposed to show and
Tears that fall when no one knows
When you're trying hard to be your best
Could you be a little less

Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like in this world
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like in this world
What it feels like for a girl

Strong inside but you don't know it
Good little girls they never show it
When you open up your mouth to speak
Could you be a little weak

Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like in this world
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
Do you know what it feels like in this world
for a girl

In this world
Do you know
Do you know
Do you know what it feels like
for a girl
What it feels like in this world

Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie had their first professional collaboration when they decided to let Guy direct the video for What It Feels. Since Guy has only done gangster movies so far, many fans reacted surprised after hearing he would direct the video for this beautiful ballad. The result of the three day video shoot in LA in February, was a little gangster movie of his own. Not the ballad from the album was used, but instead the dancy Above & Beyond remix, which leaves out all the lyrics except the chorus. "This is an angry song and I wanted a matching visual with an edgy dance mix." Madonna said. "In the video I play a nihilistic pissed off chick acting out a fantasy and doing things girls are not allowed to do." And quite some fantasy it is! We see Madonna pick up an old lady from a retirement home (called Ol' Kuntz Guest Home) and then leave with a yellow Camaro sportscar (with licence plate 'pussy' in front and 'cat' in the back) for a joy ride. She crashes a guy's car, steals money using a stun gun, shoots cops with a squirt gun, blows up a gas station,... "It's a violent video, not something you want to see before going to sleep" Liz Rosenberg commented. In the US, MTV and VH1 decided to ban the video after only one airing on april 21st. AOL streamed the video at the same time. MTV Europe did play the video, but only after 10 pm. Other music channels showed it in the daytime. It was only the second M video to be completely banned by MTV US; Justify My Love being the first. Erotica got airplay after midnight.

The theme of What It Feels Like For A Girl was definitely the main motive of the Drowned World Tour. First she appears as a cyberpunk girl, rocking on stage and standing up to her men, even toying with them (during Beautiful Stranger). When she returns as a Geisha girl she's put down on her knees for her male master, who defeats her during Nobody's Perfect. She fights back during Sky Fits Heaven and shoots another evil (male) spirit in Mer Girl. Before she transforms into a cowgirl, we finally get to hear What It Feels, but in a remix version. On screen we see an animated video, which shows a girl having a hard time, running from evil, with painful memories, images of rape,... Though in the end it turns out to be a bad dream. The video is part of the Manga movie called Perfect Blue.
In the last part of the show Madonna is a Spanish Senorita and sings Lo Que Siente La Mujer. The show ends with the last shot of the WIFLFAG video.

This is the spanish version of What It Feels Like For A Girl, which appeared on one of the maxi-singles. Spanish fans were not very enthousiastic about it, as the Spanish translation seems to be rather poor. Check out Miss Boogie Woogie to see a literal English translation of the Spanish lyrics. Spanish web mistress Emma also made a much better version, called Como Se Siente Una Chica.

(intro:)
Girls can wear jeans
And cut their hear short
Wear shirts and boots
Cause it's okay to be a boy

But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
Because you think being a girl is degrading
But secretly
You'd love to know what it's like
Wouldn't you?
What it feels like for a girl

Deliciosa
Labio suave y rosa... Baby

Quieres ver
Quieres ver
Quieres ver lo que siente la mujer
Y tratar de comprender

On the Drowned World Tour, she only sang the Spanish version of What It Feels Like For A Girl, because it fit in better with the Spanish-Latin part of the show. Wearing a beautiful black Gaultier-dress, she was sitting on a spinning stage. Then she stepped down and started dancing with each of the female dancers. Following the theme of the song, no men were on stage.
