Song of the day: Drowned World/Substitute For Love

Written by Madonna, William Orbit, Rod McKuen, Anita Kerr and David Collins
Produced by Madonna and William Orbit
Drums by Fergus Gerrand

Drowned World starts off with a male voice saying 'You see', which is a sample of 'Why I Follow The Tigers', performed by The San Sebastian Strings. The author Rod McKuen explains: "The voice belongs to Jesse Pearson and the repeated phrase is 'You see'. If you follow the lyrics on 'Drowned World' and 'Why I Follow the Tigers' you’ll find 'Drowned' follows the plot line of 'Tigers', which is why Anita [Kerr] and I receive co-author credit on the song and not merely 'sampling mention'."

This third Ray Of Light-single was released in August 1998, but only outside the US. The song clearly shows how Madonna, especially since Lola's birth, has matured. She realized fame can be a substitute for love, but it's not the most important thing in life. In the charts, Drowned World reached #10 in the UK and Japan, #5 in Italy and #16 in Australia. It was a #1 hit in Spain.

I traded fame for love
Without a second thought
It all became a silly game
Some things cannot be bought

I got exactly what I asked for
Wanted it so badly
Running, rushing back for more
I suffered fools
So gladly

And now I find
I've changed my mind

The face of you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love
Should I wait for you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love

I traveled round the world
Looking for a home
I found myself in crowded rooms
Feeling so alone

I had so many lovers
Who settled for the thrill
Of basking in my spotlight
I never felt
So happy

The face of you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love
Should I wait for you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love
Mmmm mmm mmm mmm mmm
Oh oh oh ohh

Famous faces, far off places
Trinkets I can buy
No handsome stranger, heady danger
Drug that I can try
No ferris wheel, no heart to steal
No laughter in the dark
No one night stand, no far off land
No fire that I can spark
Mmmm mmm mmm mmm mmm
Mmmm mmm mmm mmm mmm

The face of you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love
Mmmm mmm mmm mmm mmm
Should I wait for you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love

Now I find I've changed my mind

This is my religion

The video, directed by Walter Stern, shows 'a day in the life of Madonna'. In the morning she leaves her home and is awaited by tons of paparazzi, following her around. Arriving at a hotel, crazy fans try to get to her. She constantly has to run and hide, even from the other celebs in the hotel bar. In that scene all faces, except Maddy's, are distorted to make everyone look demoniacal. A touching moment is when Madonna meets the room girl that smiles at her and sees her as a person, but then gets out a camera and sees her as a famous object. Finally Madonna comes back home to find the only true love, her daughter that loves her as a person and not as a celebrity. The child in the video isn't Lourdes however, it's a 'Substitute for Lola'! The video was criticized for similating Princess Di's death. But of course, being followed by paparazzi is an element of Madonna's daily life.

Since the Drowned World Tour was named after this song, it was also the opening song. Madonna came on stage in a red kilt on top of a black cyber-punk outfit (in the US she changed this outfit). She gave a stunning performance, standing on a rising stage, surrounded by smoke. This symbolised the birth of Venus, while the stages of the musicians, drifting apart, symbolised the continents during the creation of the (drowned) world. Imagery of blue water effects stood for the element of the first part of the show: water (followed by air, earth & fire)! Such a beautiful song, being the first tour song in 8 years, it sure sent shivers down my spine!

On the Confessions Tour Madonna took a moment to address the fans and ask them where they are from by showing their flags. She urges everyone to unite and stand up against war ("Repeat after me! No more war! We want peace! F*ck George Bush!"). While she stays seated on the steps of the catwalk, she then performs Drowned World, stripped down to a beautiful acoustic version. No fancy video or choreography, just concentrating on the beauty of the song itself. And that way it's done all justice. Fans respond to this intimate moment by waving their hands - and lighters - in the air.

The sexiest...

...human being in the entire fuckin' universe!

По тази тема мога мнооого да пиша, но (поне ще се опитам) ще се огранича до няколко снимки и клипчета.

Guy Ritchie:
"I can understand that the whole world is interested in my wife. That's even why I married her."
"She's a manifester, if there ever was one. First-rate manifester. Madonna makes things happen. Put Madonna up against any twenty-three-year-old, she'll outwork them, outdance them, outperform them. The woman is broad."
Sean Penn:
"[She's] very real, very sensitive."
Sting:
"She's outrageous, she's provocative, she's inscrutable. And over the years, we've all been witnessed to her evolution, from street smart kid sister to virgin bride, from sex goddess to a yogi. Her mind is as celebrated as her body, she's as feared as she's desired, she leads while others follow... A woman who is all woman, and all women."
Marilyn Manson:
"I watched a screening of her [Madonna's] film and I was sitting right next to her, which to me was exciting still. I’m not jaded enough to not be excited by that."
The Androids:
"I'd rather do it with Madonna
She's what a woman's supposed to be
Oh Madonna won't you do it with me?
The only girl I'll ever need
She's really got me on my knees
Have you seen that film clip where she's wearing the cowboy hat and she's kicking the dirt." (from the song "I'd Rather Do it with Madonna")
Robbie Williams:
"Madonna is the ultimate in our day and age of the grass being greenest. Guy Ritchie is a lucky man. I do happen to fancy Madonna. She rehearses her arse off. Goes to the gym every day. She does all that stuff to get it spot-on and then she delivers. I'm in awe of her drive."
Darren Hayes:
"She’s a massive flirt. She’s like Bono in the respect she’s amazingly intelligent, but in an instant they know what you expect them to be and they will be that for you. That shows an incredible emotional intelligence."
Justin Timberlake:
"There's this sexual energy about her. I was totally aroused when I met her."
Tony Ward:
"That lady - I was never a fan. I saw her in that silly Lucky Star video in the early days of MTV, and I knew I would be reunited with my mother/ lover/ teacher/ friend/ bitch/ cheater/ liar/ goddess/ student/ poetess/ angel/ pain/ tears/ broken-heart/ inspiration/ intrigue/ and human awe. We fell hard immediately too much, too soon for the both of us. In the end, when you love something, let it go."
Will Smith:
"Madonna is in really good shape. I actually get a sexy chill every time I think about Madonna."
Al Pacino:
"She was doing a dance and she was naked under her coat. Over the course of the dance, she became inspired and opened her coat, and there she was. She has an extraordinarily beautiful body, like cut out of ivory. One day, when I'm old and I'm wheeled out on my porch wrapped in a blanket, if I have a beatific smile on my face, I'll probably be thinking of that."
Rupert Everett:
"When I first met Madonna she really was one of the only women that whether you were gay or straight or an animal she demanded a sexual response some how, something inside her and everybody was turned on by her, everybody!"
"She was tiny and luscious with long auburn hair, slightly curled. She sat down. Sean’s forget-me-not eyes watered with adoration. Hers were the palest blue, strangely wide-set, any further and she would look insane, or inbred. When they looked in your direction, you froze."
"In no way was she conventionally beautiful. She was a bit like a Picasso. When she fixed you with her regard, there was a tenderness and warmth that made your skin bump, but when she looked away, it was like sunbathing on a cold day and suddenly a cloud comes."
"She was mesmerizing. She oozed sex and demanded a sexual response from everyone. It didn’t matter if you were gay. You were swept up all the same. In those early years there was no male who would not want to bed her."
"...I lost myself in Madonna’s attention and by the end I had fallen in love."
Mike Myers:
"It was terrifying, It was like kissing the Eiffel Tower in terms of how famous she is."
Camille Barbone:
"Madonna loves beautiful women and she is into anyone sexually, male or female, who is beautiful."
"She loves sex and would go after any man she wanted. There's a strong maleness in Madonna. She seduces men the way men seduce women."
"Men were always overwhelmed by Madonna. She's seductive and alluring. She has an amazing ability to manipulate men, based on her sensuality and the possibility of sexual favors. The entourage of young men she had hanging around was just waiting to get into bed with her. But she was a great tease. She kept them at a distance, but always interested and intrigued."
Nicolas Sarkozy:
"The French like burgers, Madonna and Miami Vice."
Bert Stern:
"Madonna is gorgeous, the most beautiful eyes you ever saw. A little rough around the edges. She's a tough chick. She spits it out. She has her own agenda. It manifests in the pictures."

Song of the day: Like a Prayer

Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard

Early March 1989 - right before the release of the album with the same title - Like A Prayer was released as lead-off single. Combining pop, rock, dance and even gospel music, this great song hit the music scene - and in a way the society - as a bomb and would soon become an all-time Madonna classic and a favorite among fans. Along with Vogue, it would become one of two Madonna songs that topped all the charts in the US and the UK. It was #1 in the US Hot 100, Airplay, Sales, Club Play and Maxi-singles chart. No wonder it reached Platinum status. It was also #1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and numerous other countries.

Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees
I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

I hear your voice
It's like an angel sighing
I have no choice
I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes
Oh God I think I'm falling
Out of the sky
I close my eyes
Heaven help me

When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees
I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

Like a child
You whisper softly to me
You're in control
Just like a child
Now I'm dancing
It's like a dream
No end and no beginning
You're here with me
It's like a dream
Let the choir sing

When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees
I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there
When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees
I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home
Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice
Your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer
I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer
I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer
I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer
I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice
Your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice
Your voice can take me there
Your voice can take me there
Like a prayer

The fantastic music and lyrics made the song great; the Mary Lambert video made it notorious. There are many possible interpretations, but basically the video shows Madonna, witnissing a murder on a white girl. When a black man is wrongfully accused of the crime, she comes up for his defence. She prays for him in church and is seen dancing in front of burning crosses, as a contra-reaction to racist discrimination. Inside the church she kisses a black saint (or is it the black innocent guy?). There's a happy end, and they pretend it to be just a theatre play.
A few days before the premiere of the video, Pepsi first aired their brand-new commercial which starred Madonna and used the tune of Like A Prayer. However when the video was first shown, it caused outrage within the Catholic church, who were offended by Madonna using signs of stigmata (her bleeding hands), by her kissing a black saint and by "having an orgasm on the altar". The church urged people to stop buying Pepsi as a protest, after which Pepsi stopped the broadcast of their commercial after only two airings.
At the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, Like A Prayer won the Viewers Choice Award, and was nominated for Best Video of the Year.

Madonna was paid $5 million by Pepsi-Cola to appear in a commercial that would predominantly feature the world premiere of "Like a Prayer". The commercial, titled "Make a Wish", was filmed at Culver Studios in Culver City, California in late January 1989 and was directed by Joe Pytka. Depicting Madonna drinking Pepsi and watching a home video of her eighth birthday[8], the tone that the commercial sought to convey sharply contrasted with the official music video for the song. When Pepsi executives saw the completed video, they quickly yanked the advertisement after only two airings in an attempt to dissociate themselves from the controversy Madonna had created. (The two-minute commercial was shown just once on March 2, 1989 during The Cosby Show, and, in the UK, after much publicity, on March 2 during a commercial break on ITV 12 minutes into The Bill.)
Though her contract with Pepsi called for three future commercials, Madonna got to keep her five-million-dollar endorsement fee, without fulfilling her contractual obligations. When Madonna won the Viewer's Choice Award for "Like a Prayer" video at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1989, in her acceptance speech she thanked Pepsi-Cola "for causing so much controversy!".
During an MTV interview with Kurt Loder entitled "Breakfast with Madonna" in 1990, Loder asked Madonna about the "brouhaha" surrounding her own video for the song and Pepsi's reaction to it. Madonna said, "[Pepsi's spokespeople] said they just didn't like it."

As if the video hadn't caused enough controversy already, Madonna performed Like A Prayer on her Blond Ambition Tour right after the notorious Like A Virgin bed scene. Wearing a black robe over her corset and a cross around her neck, she and her dancers danced on a combination of the 12" Club Mix and the 12" Dance Mix. The stage had changed into a church with pilars and candles. Wearing black veils, Niki and Donna turned into two sexy nuns, with Niki giving an impressive solo.

'OK let's get this party started. This is a non-sitting song, so I don't wanna see anyone in his seat, okay?!' That's how Madonna kicked off Like A Prayer on the Re-Invention Tour. We waited 14 years for this performance, so dance & sing along was the least we could do. Things had changed over those years though: the cross was now replaced by Hebrew signs on the screen, displaying her new religion. And this time Niki wasn't around, so Siedah Garrett backed up Madonna with her strong vocals. One thing did stay the same: a great performance that had all the fans join in the fantastic atmosphere. Madonna made the ending extra special by slowing down on the last few lines.

One of the surprises on the Sticky & Sweet Tour was Like A Prayer. The stage was turned into a big rave party as this classic hit got mixed with Meck's 'Feels Like Home', which itself samples the 90s club hit 'Don't You Want Me' by Felix. Madonna's line 'feels like home' was now cleverly replaced by the same line by Meck. Madonna appears in true Xena-style, with a breastplate emphasizing her physical assets, and raves on stage with her dancers. Backup singer Nicki Richards proves her vocal skills in the solo. The screens display a powerful message of equality of religions. Religious symbols and texts from different scriptures flash by to give food for thought. 'We all come from the Light and to it shall we return'. No better way to introduce the next song Ray Of Light.

Italians Do It Better!

Sex is a highly designed coffee table book written by Madonna with photographs by Steven Meisel Studio and film frames taken from film shot by Fabien Baron. Sex was released on October 21, 1992 by Warner Books. The book was released by Madonna as an accompaniment to her fifth studio album Erotica, which was released a day earlier.
The extremely controversial book featured strong adult content and softcore pornographic photographs depicting simulations of sexual acts, which included sadomasochism and analingus. Madonna wrote the book as a character named Mistress Dita, inspired by 1930's film actress Dita Parlo.
Featured in the book, aside from unknown models, are actress Isabella Rossellini, rappers Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice, model Naomi Campbell, gay porn star Joey Stefano, actor Udo Kier, the European socialite Tatiana von Fürstenberg, and nightclub owner Ingrid Casares.
For the release of Sex Madonna gave a party at New York City's Industria Superstudio, which she attended dressed as Little Bo Peep with a stuffed toy lamb.

Basta!

The Queen against the Vatican.

Song of the day: Rain

Written by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone
Sequencing, keyboards and programming by Shep Pettibone
Drum programming by Tony Shimkin

This stunningly beautiful ballad was a break from the controversy surrounding the Erotica album. It was released worldwide in the summer of 1993 as fifth single. Daniel Abraham remixed the song and the more accessible Radio Remix became the main version on radio and the single releases. Though it got a lot of airplay it only went to #14 in the US and #7 in the UK. It charted better in Canada (#1), Japan (#2) and Australia (#5).

I feel it
It's coming

Rain
Feel it on my finger tips
Hear it on my window pane
Your love's coming down like
Rain
Wash away my sorrow
Take away my pain
Your love's coming down like
Rain

When your lips are burning mine
And you take the time to tell me how you feel
When you listen to my words
And I know you've heard
I know it's real
Rain is what this thunder brings
For the first time
I can hear my heart sing
Call me a fool but I know I'm not
I'm gonna stand out here on the mountain top
Til I feel your

Rain
Feel it on my finger tips
Hear it on my window pane
Your love's coming down like
Rain
Wash away my sorrow
Take away my pain
Your love's coming down like
Rain

When you looked into my eyes
And you said goodbye
Could you see my tears
When I turned the other way
Did you hear me say
I'd wait for all the dark clouds bursting in a perfect sky
You promised me when you said goodbye
That you'd return when the storm was done
And now I'll wait for the light
I'll wait for the sun
Till I feel your

Rain
Feel it on my finger tips
Hear it on my window pane
Your love's coming down like
Rain
Wash away my sorrow
Take away my pain
Your love's coming down like

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
Never go away

Waiting is the hardest thing
It's strange I feel like I've known you before
I tell myself that if I believe in you
And I want to understand you
In the dream of you
More and more and more
With all my heart and all my soul
When I'm with you
That by sheer force of will
I feel like a magical child
I will raise you from the ground
Everything strange
And without a sound you'll appear
Everything wild
And surrender to me
To love

Rain is what the thunder brings
For the first time
I can hear my heart sing
Call me a fool but I know I'm not
I'm gonna stand out here on the mountain top
Till I feel your

Rain
I feel it
It's coming
Your love's coming down like
Rain
I feel it
It's coming
Your love's coming down like

Rain
Feel it on my finger tips
Hear it on my window pane
Your love's coming down like
Rain
Wash away my sorrow
Take away my pain
Your love's coming down like

Rain
I feel it
It's coming
Your love's coming down like
Rain
I feel it
It's coming
Your love's coming down like
Rain
Step out on a mountain top and wait for you to call my name
Rain

A beautiful song deserves a stunning video, and that's what Rain got. Mark Romanek filmed everything in black & white, then had it colored manually in blue, a technique used in the early movie industry. The video shows the making of a video by a group of Asian technicians. Madonna, wearing a short black wig (!), walks around on the set and sings Rain, standing next to glass walls that drip with (fake) rain. The video got two well-deserved awards at the 1993 MTV VMA: 'Best Art Direction' and 'Best Cinematography'.

Beautiful as it might be, Rain was only performed live on the Girlie Show. But it certainly was a performance that did justice to the song. It's one of the best examples of the perfect harmony between the voices of Madonna, Niki and Donna. The heart-warming performance also included some lines of the Temptations' classic hit 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)'. At the end there's a beautiful instrumental outro (based on the Radio Remix) with the classic song 'Singin' In The Rain', while the dancers do a choreography with umbrellas, inspired by Gene Kelly's legendary rendition in the 1952 musical with the same name, with the Pierrot fancying one of the butterfly 'rain girls'.

Rain made a comeback on the Sticky & Sweet Tour as a video interlude between the Old School and Gypsy sections. However, only part of the chorus was used in combination with the Eurythmics hit 'Here Comes The Rain Again' (along with a sample of 'The Wedding Toccata Theme' by German electronic duo Modeselektor). The giant screens portray a CG animation of a fairy witnessing the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly in the rain. Meanwhile, the Hamutsun Serve dancers perform a Japanese choreography, adding to the atmosphere.

Her biggest happiness

Keep it together...

Instead of spring...

Love Tried To Welcome Me

One of my all time favorites! Fantastic song with even more fantastic lyrics. Such a shame it's not on "Something to Remember" compilation. It was actually inspired by a stripper that Madonna watched in a club. I guess we should thank the stripper. :) When I heard it for the first time, I re-winded and only listened to the words, then again, listening to the music, and one more time... listening to her voice...

Written by Madonna and Dave -Jam- Hall
Produced by Madonna and Dave -Jam- Hall

Love Tried To Welcome Me contains a line from the poem 'Love Bade Me Welcome' by George Herbert.

These are my hands
But what can they give me
These are my eyes
But they cannot see
These are my arms
But they don't know tenderness
And I must confess
That I am usually drawn to sadness
And loneliness has never been a stranger
To me but

Love tried to welcome me
But my soul drew back
Guilty of lust and sin
Love tried to take me in

These are my lips
But they whisper sorrow
This is my voice
But it's telling lies
I know how to laugh
But I don't know happiness
And I must confess
Instead of spring it's always winter
And my heart has always been
A lonely hunter but still

Love tried to welcome me
But my soul drew back
I was covered with dust and sin
Love tried to take me in
Love tried to break me

And I must confess
Instead of spring it's always winter
And my heart has always been
A lonely hunter but still

Love tried to welcome me
But my soul drew back
I was guilty of lust and sin
Love tried to take me in

Love tried to welcome me
But my soul drew back
Covered with dust and sin
Love tried to take me in
Love tried to break me (love tried to welcome me)
But my soul drew back (guilty of lust and sin)
Covered with dust, covered with sorrow (love tried to take me in)
Covered
Still
Love tried to welcome me
But my soul drew back
Guilty of lust and sin
Love tried to take me in
Love tried to break me (love tried to welcome me)
Love tried to welcome me (but my soul drew back)
But my soul drew back (guilty of lust and sin)
Covered with sorrow (love tried to take me in)
Love tried to welcome me

Sanctuary

Great lyrics!

Written by Madonna, Dallas Austin, Anne Preven, Scott Cutler and Herbie Hancock
Produced by Madonna and Dallas Austin
Remixed by Nellee Hooper

Sanctuary contains a sample of 'Watermelon Man', performed by Herbie Hancock.

Madonna also used lines from the poem 'Leaves Of Grass' by Walt Whitman. ('Surely, whoever speaks to me in the right voice, him or her I shall follow, as the water follows the moon, silently, with fluid steps')

Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow

Who needs the sun
When the rain's so full of life
Who needs the sky
It's here in your arms
I want to be buried
You are
My sanctuary

Who needs the sun
When the rain's so full of life
Who needs the sky
When the ground's open wide
It's here in your arms
I want to be buried
You are
My sanctuary

Who needs a smile
When a tear's so full of love
Who needs a home
With the stars up above
It's here in your heart
I want to be carried
You are
My sanctuary

Who needs the light
With the darkness in your eyes
Who needs to sleep
With the stars in the sky
It's here in your soul
I want to be married
You are
My sanctuary

And the earth was void and empty
And darkness was upon the face of the earth

Is all of this pain so necessary
You
Are
My sanctuary

Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow
As the water follows the moon
Silently
(Who needs the sun)
With fluid steps
(Who needs the sky)
Around the globe
( Who needs to sleep)
I hear your voice
You are (you are)
My sanctuary
You are (you are)
You are (you are)
My sanctuary

Song of the day: Take a Bow

Take a Bow

Written by Babyface and Madonna
Produced by Babyface and Madonna
Background vocals by Babyface

This ballad was released as second single in December 1994. Though many fans don't consider it as a real Madonna classic, it stands as her longest running hit single at the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100, holding it for seven weeks. It was certified only Gold though because the real driving force behind the single was airplay. It also reached the #1 spot in many other countries, including Japan and Canada. The UK was less enthousiastic: there the song stalled at #16, making it her lowest peaking UK single. Madonna accentuated the Oriental feel of Take A Bow when she performed it in a Chinese gown at the 1995 American Music Awards as a duet with Babyface.

Take a bow
The night is over
This masquerade is getting older
Light are low
The curtains down
There's no one here
(There's no one here, there's no one in the crowd)

Say your lines
But do you feel them
Do you mean what you say
When there's no one around (no one around)
Watching you, watching me
One lonely star
(One lonely star, you don't know who you are)

I've always been in love with you (always with you)
I guess you've always known it's true (you know it's true)
You took my love for granted, why oh why (why oh why)
The show is over, say good-bye
Say good-bye (bye bye)
Say good-bye

Make them laugh
It comes so easy
When you get to the part
Where you're breaking my heart (breaking my heart)
Hide behind your smile
All the world loves a clown
(Just make 'em smile, the whole world loves a clown)

Wish you well
I cannot stay
You deserve an award
For the role that you played (role that you played)
No more masquerade
You're one lonely star
(One lonely star and you don't know who you are)

I've always been in love with you (always with you)
I guess you've always known it's true (you know it's true)
You took my love for granted, why oh why (why oh why)
The show is over, say good-bye

I've always been in love with you (always with you)
I guess you've always known it's true (you know it's true)
You took my love for granted, why oh why (why oh why)
The show is over, say good-bye
Say good-bye (bye bye)
Say good-bye

All the world is a stage (world is a stage)
And everyone has their part (has their part)
But how was I to know
Which way the story'd go
How was I to know you'd break
You'd break, you'd break, you'd break
You'd break my heart

I've always been in love with you (I've always been in love with you)
Guess you've always known
You took my love for granted, why oh why (why oh why)
The show is over, say good-bye

I've always been in love with you (always with you)
I guess you've always known it's true (you know it's true)
You took my love for granted, why oh why (why oh why)
The show is over, say good-bye
Say good-bye (bye bye)
Say good-bye

Say good-bye

Madonna and director Michael Haussman went to Ronda, Spain to shoot the video. Madonna appears as the lover of bullfighter Emilio Munoz. The video caused controversy, not only with animal rights movements, but also with feminists who accused Madonna of portraying a subservient woman, abused by her macho bullfighting lover. However, in the You'll See video Madonna would get revenge on her scrub boyfriend. She also used the Take A Bow video - in which her look was highly inspired by Evita - to convince Alan Parker to cast her for the 1996 movie Evita. At the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, Take A Bow won Best Female Video. It was also nominated for Best Art Direction, but lost out to Michael & Janet Jackson's 'Scream'.

Song of the... life: You'll See

I'm in a dramatic mood today, sorry 'bout this, but... The most amazing song... ever...

Written by Madonna and David Foster
Produced and arranged by Madonna and David Foster
Keyboards by David Foster
Synclavier programming by Simon Franglen
Acoustic guitars by Dean Parks
Electric guitars by Michael Thompson

In the fall of 1995, Madonna released You'll See, the lead-off single for Something To Remember. The song can be seen as a follow-up to Take A Bow. The single did pretty well in the charts, reaching #1 in Japan, #5 in Italy and UK and #6 in the US. It was certified Gold in the US and Japan. A Spanish version, called Veras, appeared on one of the maxi-singles.

You think that I can't live
Without your love
You'll see
You think I can't go on
Another day

You think I have nothing
Without you by my side
You'll see
Somehow, some way

You think that I can never
Laugh again
You'll see
You think that you destroyed
My faith in love

You think after all you've done
I'll never find my way back home
You'll see
Somehow, someday

All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
I know I'll survive
I know I'll stay alive

All on my own
I don't need anyone this time
It will be mine
No one can take it from me
You'll see

You think that you are strong
But you are weak
You'll see
It takes more strength to cry
Admit defeat

I have truth on my side
You only have deceit
You'll see
Somehow, someday

All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
I know I'll survive
I know I'll stay alive

I'll stand on my own
I won't need anyone this time
It will be mine
No one can take it from me
You'll see

You'll see
You'll see
You'll see, mmm mmm

Video

Director Michael Haussman and Madonna decided to make the video a direct sequel to Take A Bow. In that video, Madonna was mistreated by her lover, the bullfighter Emilio Munoz. This time she walks out on him, leaving him behind in despair. She's seen on the train and later on a plane, while Emilio tries to catch up with her in vain.

Madonna surprised her fans when she performed You'll See on some of the US shows during the Drowned World Tour, instead of Gone, which was part of all the European shows and the other US shows. She might have looked vulnerable, being all alone in the spotlights in the front of the stage, but she proves to be very strong, like the lyrics suggest.

Veras

Tu piensas que yo no podre vivir sin ti
Tu piensas no podra sobrevivir

Podre resistir
Voy a poder seguir
Lo hare por mi
Sera mi gloria personal
Nadie, ni tu, me la podra quitar
Veras

Acepta la verdad, no llorare por ti
Yo se que asi sera, podre salir
Voy a saltar sin red, y no voy a caer
Sera mejor sin ti

Ya lo veras
No necesito a nadie mas
Podre resistir
Voy a poder seguir
Lo hare por mi
Sera mi gloria personal
Nadie, ni tu, me la podra quitar
Veras

Energy!!!

She's Not Me

...and never will be...

The Queen for The King

Как може...

...тази песен да не е издадена?!

Written by Madonna and Steve Bray
Produced by Madonna and Steve Bray

In the early 80s Madonna and Steve Bray recorded a few demo's. A few would be used on Madonna's first album, others appeared on the -unofficial- albums Pre-Madonna and In The Beginning several years later.
Most of them - like Laugh To Keep From Crying - were never officially released.

I can't lock my door
Oh, I don't have no privacy
The only thing that's mine
Is what's inside of me

When I've had enough
A little voice inside
It says you've got to be tough
You've got to take it in stride

Sometimes I am foolish
I let it get the best of me
At least I know that my mistakes
Are my responsibility

And I just have to laugh
To keep from crying
I just have to laugh
To keep from crying

I don't have a dime
Oh, to buy those pretty things
But I hear all the evidence
You know it all sounds the same

But I'm still waiting
I've got my hands open wide
You know my dream isn't fading
I keep it hidden inside

Oh I just have to laugh
To keep from crying
I just have to laugh
To keep from crying
I just have to laugh
To keep from crying
I keep on trying

My friends don't understand
Oh, they think I've lost my mind
And I'm choking back the tears
I've got to swallow my pride

I just have to laugh
To keep from crying
I just have to laugh
To keep from crying

I just have to laugh, ah
La, ah
Lo, oh
La, ah

I LOVE this song!

He's a man

Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
Mixed by Brian Malouf
Drums by Jeffrey Porcaro
Bass by Guy Pratt
Keyboards by Patrick Leonard
Background vocals by Donna DeLory, Niki Haris and Ndea Davenport

All work and no play
Makes Dick a dull dull boy, career gets in the way
Square jaw, ooo, such a handsome face
Why do you have to save the human race?

Life of crime, no it never pays
Clean up the streets and make your secret get-away
All alone, in your room with your radio
No one to hold you, had to let her go

You're a man with a gun in your hand
Waging a war between good and evil can be a bore
If you don't take time, it's not nice
So here's my advice
Take your love on the run (on the run)
Oh God, let me be the one (be the one)
Ah, ah, ah, man with a gun

All boss and no brains
Bullies and thugs, they take up all your time in vain
Can't let go, someone cries and you hear the call
Who's gonna catch you, don't good guys ever fall?

You're a man with a gun in your hand
Waging a war between good and evil can be a bore
If you don't take time, it's not nice
So here's my advice
Take your love on the run (on the run)
Oh God, let me be the one (be the one)
Ah, ah, ah, man with a gun

All alone, in your room with your radio
No one to hold you, I would never let you go

You're a man with a gun in your hand
Waging a war between good and evil can be a bore
If you don't take time, it's not nice
So here's my advice
Take your love on the run (on the run)
Oh God, let me be the one (be the one)
'Cause I can show you some fun
And I don't mean with a gun, no

You are a man with a gun in your hand
Waging a war between good and evil can be a bore
If you don't take time, it's not nice
So here's my advice
Take your love on the run (on the run)
Oh God, let me be the one (be the one)
Ah, ah, ah, man with a gun, take it out of your hand

Waging a war between good and evil can be a bore
If you don't take time, it's not nice
So here's my advice
Take your love on the run (on the run)
Oh God, let me be the one (be the one)
Show you some fun
Gimme that gun

The Mask of...

I have a cage...

I have a cage
It's called the stage
When I'm let out
I run about
And sing and dance and sweat and yell
I have so many tales to tell
I like to push things to the edge
And inch my way along the ledge
I feel like God, I feel like shit
The paradox, an even split
It's just a job, I always say
I should be grateful everyday
Sometimes I think I just can't do it
But I persist and I get through it
And I console myself each night
At least my cage is filled with light.

I'm not your bitch!

Един от химните на живота ми! С един от най-страхотните клипове!

Written by Madonna, Dave Hall, S. McKenzie, K. McKenzie and M. Deering
Produced by Madonna and Dave -Jam- Hall

Human Nature contains a sample of 'What You Need', performed by Main Source.

Human Nature

Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Handle it)

You wouldn't let me say the words I longed to say
You didn't want to see life through my eyes
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)
You tried to shove me back inside your narrow room
And silence me with bitterness and lies
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)

Did I say something wrong?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex
(I musta been crazy)
Did I stay too long?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't speak my mind
(What was I thinking)

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Handle it)

You punished me for telling you my fantasies
I'm breakin' all the rules I didn't make
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)
You took my words and made a trap for silly fools
You held me down and tried to make me break
(Express yourself, don't repress yourself)

Did I say something true?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex
(I musta been crazy)
Did I have a point of view?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about you
(What was I thinking)

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Handle it)

Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself

Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself
Express yourself, don't repress yourself

Did I say something true?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex
(I musta been crazy)
Did I have a point of view?
Oops I didn't know I couldn't talk about you
(What was I thinking)

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Handle it)

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(I'm not apologizing)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
(Would it sound better if I were a man?)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(You're the one with the problem)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Why don't you just deal with it)

'Cause I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(Would you like me better if I was?)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
(We all feel the same way)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(I have no regrets)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Just look in the mirror)

And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(I don't have to justify anything)
It's human nature (It's human nature)
(I'm just like you)
And I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
(Why should I be?)
I'm not your bitch
Don't hang your shit on me (It's human nature)
(Deal with it)

In the summer of 1995, the fourth and final single was released. With Human Nature Madonna gets back on her critics, who slagged her off during the Erotica period. She ridicules the taboos surrounding sex; "why do people get hung up over something most of us do and enjoy? Get over it, handle it. Express yourself, don't repress yourself." Great message, but it didn't sell: with a #46 in the US it scored even worse than Bedtime Story. In the UK, Canada and Japan it scored a bit better with respectively a #8, #9 and #10 position. In the Hot Dance / Club Play it stalled at #2 for three weeks. On the other hand, it's one of just a few Madonna songs that scored on the R&B airplay chart.

With Justify My Love and Open Your Heart photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino had already proven to be a great director. For Human Nature he filmed Madonna and her dancers in a fantastic choreography. Though they're all dressed in a leather S&M-outfit, the video is rather humorous than erotic. It also shows Madonna using her whip on her own chihuahua Chiquita, who's equally dressed up in leather.

A surprise on the Drowned World Tour was Human Nature. Dressed in a shirt with US flag-motive, Madonna wrapped herself and her dancers up in ropes again for this fantastic song. She climbed on a mechanical bull, dancing on top, while a vocoder played with the lyrics 'oops I didn't know we couldn't talk about seeeeeeeeex!'.

Madonna translated the relationship between Britney Spears and the press into a new version of Human Nature on the Sticky & Sweet Tour. While the screens show Britney trapped in an elevator, Madonna straps on the electric guitar to give the song a rocking ballsy make-over. Dressed in just a see-through outfit revealing her sexy black underwear, a top hat and knee-high boots, she looks as hot as she did in the original video 13 years earlier. At the end, the song's trademark line 'I'm not your bitch' is cleverly combined with Spears' 'It's Britney bitch!'. The pop star joined Madonna live onstage at the Los Angeles show.
